BIG RAPIDS – In celebration of Armed Forces Day 2022, the Big Rapids American Legion Post 98 is hosting the first golf tournament of the year on Saturday, May 21 at Clear Lake Country Club.

Registration is open to all, and registrations for teams or individual golfers will continue through to the tournament. The tournament is designed as a 4-person scramble and registration costs $75 per person.

Golfers are automatically entered into a drawing for four Detroit Tiger tickets behind the Tigers’ dugout for the July 4th game against the Cleveland Guardians and parking lots. The price is a $400 package. Many other prizes are included for participants including hot dogs on the 9th hole and a pulled pork meal on the 19th hole.

Armed Forces Day is a holiday when people around the world come together to say thank you to the men and women of the US Armed Forces. The holiday was first conceived by President Harry S. Truman and introduced in 1949. The creation of a one-day celebration for all five branches of the US military made sense due to unification under the Department of Defense in 1947.

Today, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May, this year it falls on May 21st.

American Legion Post 98 commander Mark Brejcha said the event was an opportunity to honor both service providers and their families.

“A golf outing is a great way to have fun and honor all of our local veterans who served this great nation,” Brejcha said. “We also salute the families who have supported them. Post 98 thanks the staff at Clear Lake Country Club for allowing us to come out and enjoy each other’s company at their beautiful facility.”
