Diego Costa appears safe in Atletico Madrid’s January transfer window from LaLiga
The striker received club permission on Monday to miss Atletico Madrid’s training session
The 32-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, but he is aiming for a move beforehand and is pushing for an early escape during the January transfer window.
Luis Suarez and Joao Felix have established themselves as strong attacking duo for Simeone and Costa has only made three substitute missions in more than two months.
He is plagued by injuries and has only scored once since the start of the season.
Costa made 120 appearances for Chelsea in a productive three-year period between 2014 and 2017
In Spain it was reported that the club is ready to terminate Costa’s contract early and find a solution that works for all parties.
Costa spent eight years at Atletico over three terms and returned in 2018 after winning the Premier League twice with Chelsea between 2014 and 2017.
His departure would put an end to any prospect of meeting the Blues in the Champions League round of 16 against Atletico next year.
Costa scored 59 goals in 82 games during a productive period at Stamford Bridge and reacted excitedly on social media as the Champions League draw was made.
Despite falling out of favor recently, Costa has made a total of 215 appearances for the club, scoring 83 goals and providing 36 assists.
He scored for the first time in the same game as Suarez with a goal against Elche earlier this month but was introduced for just three minutes of the 2-0 Real Sociedad win on Tuesday.
