Every year on December 7th, Flag Day of the Armed Forces or Flag Day of India is celebrated to honor our soldiers in uniform who have fought and continue to fight on our borders.

Flag Day of the Armed Forces has been celebrated in India every year since 1949. It began when a committee set up under the then Defense Minister decided on August 28, 1949 to celebrate a flag day on December 7th each year.

The idea behind the day was then to distribute small flags to the people in the country in exchange for a donation.

Flag Day has grown in importance over the years as the civilian population of India was responsible for looking after the families and members of the armed forces who lost their lives for the country.

Now the day is also dedicated to raising funds from the country’s people for the benefit of the Indian armed forces.

Funds are raised in almost every state for the widowed wives of the martyrs, their children, and ex-soldiers injured or disabled in the service.

Goal setting

The three main goals of Flag Day are – combat casualty rehabilitation, the welfare of service personnel and their families, and the relocation and welfare of ex-soldiers and their families

The Flag Day Fund is administered in the country by the local offices of the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), which is part of the Ministry of Defense.

The collection is organized both officially and unofficially by voluntary organizations.
