War in Ukraine: What you need to know
The newest: The Group of 20 summit ended Friday without a traditional communiqué or even a group photo as a sign of the deep divisions between the world’s largest economies caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was among diplomats who condemned Moscow’s blockade of millions of tons of grain stored in Ukrainian ports, the catalyst for rising food prices around the world. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who twice walked out of meetings, was not present for Blinken’s comments but accused his Western counterparts of “rabid Russophobia.”
The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is gaining ground in eastern Ukraine against brave but under-equipped Ukrainian forces. The United States and its allies are scrambling to supply the massive amounts of arms the Ukrainians desperately need to keep the Russians at bay.
The weapons: Ukraine uses weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones provided by the United States and other allies. Russia has used a variety of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have drawn the attention and concern of analysts.
