SI Children’s Museum celebrates Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day, and a day of free admission!
STATEN ISLAND, NY — The Staten Island Children’s Museum is celebrating a number of special occasions this month, including Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day and a day of free admission created in partnership with the Staten Island Alliance to promote Pre-K for All.
In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, on Sunday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m. in a free outdoor event, representatives of the New York Chinese Cultural Center will tell the story of their center and perform a celebratory fan and ribbon dance along with an energetic kung fu demonstration.
Also every day in the walk in! In the workshop, visitors will learn about the art of kite making, which originated in China almost 2,500 years ago, while building and decorating their own miniature kite. Take your moms to a special ShopRite Kidz Cook on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 8) when visitors work together to prepare yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit throughout the day.
Yayoi Kusama’s delightful and iconic art will continue the recognition of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and serve as inspiration for a printmaking workshop led by Makerspace NYC on Saturday, May 14 at 4 p.m., on Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m., Binx the Wizard will put on a crazy and mysterious magic show in a free outdoor performance that includes a dance party.
Beginning on Armed Forces Day, Sunday, May 21, and through Labor Day, September 5, the museum, in partnership with the Blue Star Museums program, is offering free admission to the families of active-duty military personnel. Also on Saturday May 21 to promote Free Pre-K for everyoneThe museum is partnering with the Staten Island Alliance to offer a free day at the museum with special hours from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Prior registration is required to enter the museum.

“I would like to encourage all 2018 child carers to join us at Free PreK for a full day. The Education Officers are a great resource for families and can help make a sometimes confusing process much more accessible,” said Dina Rosenthal, Executive Director.
Additionally that day Bilingual birdies returns to the museum to offer light-hearted, musical Spanish classes for kids. The class will be a free outdoor event from 1pm to 1.45pm. On Sunday, May 22nd, in all day sessions, Ms. Becky will return with me ShopRite Kidz cook. Young chefs prepare Orange Chicken with Broccoli and Air Fried Chicken Egg Rolls.
