Eid al-Fitr is the Muslim holiday that marks the end of the Islamic month of fasting, Ramadan.
Muslims in Ukraine – who make up about 1 percent of the population – will celebrate the festival in a war zone as the Russian invasion has devastated much of the country.
Ukrainian authorities plan to evacuate more civilians from Mariupol on Monday after the city was mired under heavy Russian shelling for several weeks. The war has intensified in the eastern parts of the country, where Moscow’s forces appear to be concentrating their attacks.
Russia launched its first attack in late February. The war has resulted in thousands of deaths and is believed to have forced around 11 million people to flee their homes.
